A graduate of Duncannon High School, she had worked at the Pentagon in the Department of Defense for 29 years, prior to retiring. Fred was the last surviving of their ten children. Fields served there in a turbulent period which ultimately ended with special state legislation placing leadership of the district under then-Mayor Stephen R. Reed, an option that Fields, at the time, had come to support as a way to bring some stability back to the district.
